International Institute for Population Science
The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) Mumbai, formerly known as the Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC) till 1970, was established in July 1956 under the joint sponsorship of the Government of India, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, , and the United Nations. The Institute is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The Institute serves as a regional centre for Training and Research in Population Studies for the ESCAP region. The Institute was re-designated to its present title in 1985 to facilitate the expansion of its academic activities and was declared as a 'Deemed University' in August 14, 1985 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. This recognition has facilitated the award of degrees by the Institute itself and paved the way for further expansion of the Institute as an academic institution. The faculty members and the supporting staff belong to diverse interdisciplinary background with specialisation in some core areas of population sciences, trained in India and abroad. The Institute is the hub of population and health related teaching and research in India, playing a vital role for planning and development of the country. During the past years, students from different countries of Asia and the Pacific region, Africa and North America have been trained at the Institute. The alumni of the Institute are occupying prestigious positions at reputed national and international organisations, universities, research institutes and non-governmental organisations. M.A./M.Sc. in Population Studies
1. MASTER OF ARTS/SCIENCE IN POPULATION STUDIES (M.A./M.Sc.) Applications are invited for admission to M.A./M.Sc. in Population Studies for the Academic Session 2022- 2024.
The classes for the course will begin on July 11, 2022.
No. of Seats: 55 Seats with Government of India Fellowship. Eligibility: Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in India or abroad in any subject with a minimum of 55% marks (50% for reserved candidates) of aggregate marks/equivalent grade in all subjects will be eligible for admission. Candidates who have already passed the qualifying degree examinations and those who have already appeared/shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply. However, the admission of the candidate will be cancelled, if s/he fails to furnish final result by September 30, 2022.
The upper age limit is 25 years as on June 30, 2022. Marks and age will be relaxed for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/PWD/EWS categories as per Government of India rules only.

Candidate who have already passed the qualifying examinations and those who have already appeared/ shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply. Eligibility: Candidates having M.A./M.Sc. degree from a recognized university in India or abroad with a minimum of 55% (50% for reserved candidates) of aggregate marks/equivalent grade in the subjects; Anthropology, Bio-statistics, Development Studies, Economics, Geography, Health Statistics, Mathematics, Population Studies, Political Science, Population Education, Psychology, Rural Development, Social Work, Sociology, and Statistics will be eligible for admission. Candidates having Master degree, other than subjects specified above and having at least two years of experience in Population and Health related field are also eligible to apply. Candidates who have already passed the qualifying degree examinations and those who have already appeared/ shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply. However, the admission of the candidate will be cancelled, if s/he fails to furnish final result by September 30, 2022. The upper age limit of application is 28 years as on June 30, 2022. Ph.D in Population Studies/ Bio-statistics and Demography
4. DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN POPULATION STUDIES / BIO-STATISTICS AND DEMOGRAPHY (Ph.D.)
Applications are invited for admission to Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Population Studies/Bio-statistics and Demography during the academic session 2022-23 to commence from July 11, 2022.
No. of Fellowships: As per availability of GOI fellowships.
In addition, UGC-JRF and other fellowship holders will be considered for admission as per availability of seats.
Eligibility: Candidates having MPS in Population Studies / MA/M.Sc in Population Studies / M.Sc. in Bio-statistics & Demography / Master Degree in any discipline with at least one paper/ one course /one subject in Population Studies /Demography/Bio-statistics/Health Statistics or M.Phil. in Population Studies/Demography/Biostatistics & Demography/ from a recognised university with at least 55% / B+ of aggregate marks in all subjects is eligible to apply. Marks and age are relaxable for candidates belonging to reserved categories and women as per GoI rules. Candidate who have already passed the qualifying examination and those who have already appeared/shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply.
However, admission of the candidate will be cancelled if s/he fails to furnish the final examination result by September 30, 2022. The upper age limit is 30 years as on June 30, 2022. Marks and age will be relaxed for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/PWD/EWS categories as per Government of India rules.
Duration: Two years’ full time to a maximum of six years. Duration is specified for thesis submission and not for fellowship. Fellowship: Government of India Fellowships @ Rs. 31,000/- per month for 1st and 2nd years and Rs. 35,000/- per month for 3rd and 4th years available for the Indian students who have qualified NET for Lectureship in Population Studies or its inter-disciplinary subjects conducted by the UGC. Such Ph.D. fellowship also carries a contingency grant of Rs. 10,000/- per year for the first two years and Rs. 20,500/- for the third and fourth year. However, the candidates without NET qualification shall be awarded fellowship @ Rs. 12,000/- per month for the 1st and 2nd years, and Rs. 14,000/- per month for the 3rd and 4th years, with a contingency grant of Rs. 10,000/- per year. In addition, UGC-JRF and other fellowship holders will also be considered for admission.
Selection Criteria: The admission to Ph.D. programme is through a three-stage process; Online Entrance Test, research proposal writing, and personal interview. The Online Entrance Test will consist of objective type questions of multiple choices. The syllabus of Online Entrance Test will consist of questions on English, Logical Reasoning, Statistics, Mathematics, Bio-statistics, Research Methodology, Population Studies, Demography and Epidemiology. The test venue will be notified in the Admit Card. Based on the performance in the Online Test, shortlisted candidates will be called for research proposal writing and personal interview at IIPS. Final selection will be based on the weighted average of scores of Online Test, research proposal and personal interview. The Institute will not bear any travel expense of the candidates called for the test/personal interview.

Part-time Ph.D
5. PART-TIME PH.D PROGRAMME
Applications are invited for admission to the Part-time Ph.D. programme of the Institute for the academic session 2022-23. Duration: Four to Six years including Pre-PhD course work. No. of Seats: Two Eligibility: The part-time Ph.D. programme shall be open to candidates with Master’s degree and at least five years of work experience after Master’s Degree in the field of Population Studies/Demography/Public Health in academic institutions/central and state governments/research and development organizations, who are unable to pursue the doctoral programme in full-time mode. The applicants for part-time Ph.D. programme shall be exempted from appearing for the online entrance test. The Pre-Ph.D. course work (eight months duration) shall be compulsory for the candidates admitted to the Ph.D. programme under part-time mode. Total duration of part-time Ph.D. programme shall be for a minimum of four years (including coursework) and maximum of six years. No Age Limit.
Selection Criteria: Candidates should apply online. However, they are required to send a hard copy of research proposal to the Institute. Selection will be based on off-line written test and personal interview conducted by the Ph.D. Admission Committee of the Institute. The Institute shall not bear travel expense of the candidates called for the written test and interview. Registration for Admission Test and Processing Fee: All eligible candidates are required to register online by visiting the Institute’s website www.iipsindia.ac.in during February 07, 2022 to March 30, 2022. 6. POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP (P.D.F.) ADMISSION PROCEDURE WILL BE OFFLINE MODE
Applications are invited for admission to the full-time P.D.F. programme of the Institute with Government of India fellowship for the academic session 2022-23. Duration: One year full-time. No. of GOI Fellowships: Maximum Five (5) Eligibility: Candidates having Ph.D. degree in Population Studies or subjects related to Population, Health Sciences, Gender Studies, Development Studies and Social Sciences are eligible to apply. Eligible foreign candidates can also apply for admission, provided they secure financial support from any outside agency. Female candidates are encouraged to apply for the P.D.F. Desirable: Publications in peer reviewed journals/edited books. The upper age limit is 40 years as on June 30, 2022. Fellowship: The selected Indian candidates will be awarded Government of India fellowship @Rs. 50,000/- plus HRA per month for one year. Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on the research proposal presentation and personal Interview. The Institute shall not bear travel expense of the candidates called for the presentation and interview. All selected candidates shall be paid to-and-fro economy class air-fare expenses at the time of joining and completing the programme. All selected candidates are required to be at the Institute as a full-time research fellow. All eligible candidates are required to apply by June 30, 2022. Processing Fee: The non-refundable processing fee is Rs. 1000/- for General category, Rs. 500/- for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) and Rs. 500/- for EWS category, Rs. 250/- for SC/ST/PWD category. The bank draft should be in favour of Director, IIPS, Mumbai. Processing fee will not be charged from the foreign candidates while submission of application forms.
